The British Potato Famine

If the cause of inter-ethnic differences can be regarded as a single event, the source of hatred to all the British Irish lies behind the event, referred to as the Great Potato Famine. During this time, the population has decreased by a quarter.

Over the 45 years before the famine, Ireland, if not rolled in clover, anyway, flourished. But with the departure of the army of Wellington appeared surplus of labor in 1815.

The surplus labor would be useful, as in Ireland, an abundance of fertile soils and rich fields. But the British brought not only the forces of Wellington. Entire herds of livestock, barges oats, wheat and rye from the left is now a growing population of Ireland to England.

And as Ireland's population continued to grow, its basket of goods became increasingly scarce. Finally, the Irish, along with the Belgians, were nicknamed "potato eaters" as the potato became the main dish in their menu.

So, to the beginning of the XIX century, Ireland was no longer rich country, everywhere felt poverty. And since most of its agricultural products were shipped to England, soon the famine started here.

When due to illness and decreased yields of this crop, hunger began to intensify. Tens of thousands of people died quietly at home, tens of thousands died along the roads. People were dying not only from cholera, scurvy and typhus, but from hypothermia. Huge masses of peasants were thrown from their homes when they could no longer collect the wheat harvest to pay the rent. There were also cases of cannibalism. Shallow graves dug right next to the road. They are often desecrated stray dogs, which tore the bodies apart.

Meanwhile, of the 13 ports of Ireland continued to serve ships loaded with grain and other agricultural products.
